We visited the Purple Poppadom on a busy Friday night and had the chef’s tasting menu – a collection of dishes covering a fair chunk of the menu.
All the food was really, really good. Beautifully presented, delicately and interestingly spiced and all perfectly cooked. We found that the service matched the food; friendly, knowledgeable and timed just right for us.
The tasting menu consists of a plate of 3 different starters, then a plate of 3 different seafood portions then 3 meat options. This is followed by a main course of a curry, rice, naan and vegetable dish (we had a black bean daal) and then a selection of 3 desserts. Altogether it was more than enough food.
Highlights were the cheese samosa starter, the soft-shell crab and the wonderful, soft, spiced prawn. The main course curry was a lovely rich, sweet and spicy chicken curry – a bit like chicken cooked in a warm spicy marmalade – and I mean that in a really good way. The rice with the main course was excellent and I would have eaten it on its own.
The only comment I’d make is that the tasting menu can be a bit intense; you don’t get garnish or veg alongside the main events on each plate, which can make it a bit rich. Nonetheless, as a way to experience the highlights of this very good restaurant I’d still recommend it.
I will be doing all I can to come back here the next time I’m in Cardiff.
